How Many Followers Is a Lot on Bluesky? (I Checked 8,826 Accounts)

On Bluesky, 100 followers is more than most accounts will ever have, and 1,000 puts you in roughly the top 1%. The typical Bluesky account has just 3 followers. But most of those accounts never post, so compare yourself to people who actually use the app: among accounts active on the network on October 12, 2026, the median was 425 followers, and 10,000 put you in the top 4%.

Every answer I found to this question lists celebrities, says that Bluesky follower counts run lower than on X, and stops. Nobody gives the numbers in between, so I measured them. I sampled 3,829 random Bluesky accounts from the public account directory and 4,997 accounts that were active on the network during a 10-minute window, and looked up each one's follower count.

(Disclosure: I make Agent Sky, a Bluesky growth tool. More on it at the end.)

How Many Followers Does the Average Bluesky User Have?

Three. That's the median across 3,829 random Bluesky accounts that still existed on October 12, 2026. The mean is 81, but a few large accounts pull it up, so the median is the honest number here.

Followers of a random Bluesky account (n = 3,829, October 12, 2026):

Followers Share of accounts
0 27.6%
1–9 38.7%
10–49 22.1%
50–99 4.7%
100–499 4.9%
500–999 0.9%
1,000 or more 1.1%

Two-thirds of accounts have fewer than 10 followers. The reason is simple: 65% of these accounts have never posted. Lots of people signed up during one of Bluesky's big waves of sign-ups, followed a few accounts and stopped there. They still count toward Bluesky's 40-million-plus registered users, and they're the reason the typical account looks so small.

Even among accounts that had posted at least 10 times (601 of the 3,829), the median was only 48 followers.

How Many Followers Do Active Bluesky Users Have?

About 425. Comparing yourself with abandoned accounts isn't much use, so I took a second sample. I recorded every account that did something on Bluesky (posted, liked, reposted, followed or blocked) during 10 minutes of the public network stream on October 12, 2026. That was 41,660 accounts. I picked 5,000 at random and looked them up (4,997 still existed).

Where a follower count ranks (October 12, 2026):

Followers Share of all accounts with at least this many Share of active accounts with at least this many
10 33.7% 96.0%
50 11.6% 86.8%
100 6.9% 78.9%
500 2.0% 46.0%
1,000 1.1% 30.3%
5,000 0.16% 7.5%
10,000 0.13% 4.0%
100,000 0 of 3,829 0.2%

How to read it: if you have 1,000 followers, about 1 Bluesky account in 100 has as many as you. Compared with people who were active that day, about 3 in 10 do.

The percentiles for active accounts:

  1. Bottom quarter: fewer than 129 followers.
  2. Median: 425 followers.
  3. Top quarter: 1,284 or more.
  4. Top 10%: 3,653 or more.
  5. Top 1%: about 31,000 or more.

Active accounts are a tougher group than they look, because a 10-minute window favors people who are on Bluesky constantly. Someone who likes 200 posts a day is far more likely to show up than someone who opens the app once a week. So treat these numbers as the bar for heavy users, not casual ones.

Is 1,000 Followers on Bluesky Good?

Yes, and how good depends on how long you've been on Bluesky. Older accounts have had more time to build an audience, and many of them arrived during the big waves of sign-ups in 2023 and 2024. That's when people followed each other in bulk through starter packs. Here's the active sample split by the year each account was created:

Followers of active accounts by year joined (October 12, 2026):

Joined Accounts Median followers Top 10% have at least
2023 1,768 722 4,701
2024 2,059 458 4,427
2025 656 202 1,745
2026 508 46 681

If you joined in 2026 and have 200 followers, you're in the top quarter of active accounts that joined this year, even though 200 sounds small next to the 2023 group. That's the fairer comparison. (For how quickly accounts actually grow month to month, see how fast you can grow on Bluesky.)

Followers also aren't the whole picture. On Bluesky, a lot of a post's reach comes from feeds and reposts rather than from your own followers. That's why small accounts sometimes get engagement rates over 100%. If you want to see how your own posts compare with accounts your size, our free Bluesky analytics tool checks any handle against those benchmarks.

How Many Accounts Have a Million Followers on Bluesky?

About ten, not counting Bluesky's own account. As of mid-September 2026, Wikipedia's list of the most-followed Bluesky accounts had ten accounts over 1 million. The ones I checked on October 12, 2026:

Account Followers
@bsky.app (Bluesky's own account) 35,234,206
@aoc.bsky.social (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) 2,209,697
@mcuban.bsky.social (Mark Cuban) 1,480,269
@npr.org (NPR) 1,011,713

Bluesky's own account is a special case: new users follow it during sign-up, so its count tracks sign-ups more than popularity. The largest account in my random sample of 3,829 had 33,529 followers. In the active sample, the largest had 565,162. Accounts that big are so rare that random sampling barely finds them.

What I Learned From the Numbers

  1. Most Bluesky accounts are empty. Two-thirds have fewer than 10 followers, and 65% have never posted.
  2. 100 followers is a real milestone. It puts you ahead of about 93% of all accounts.
  3. The fair benchmark is active accounts that joined when you did. For a 2026 account, the median is 46 followers and the top 10% start at 681.
  4. 10,000 is rare even among heavy users. Only 4% of the active sample had that many.

How I measured it, and the limits. For the all-accounts sample, I read 150 random points in time from April 2023 to October 2026 in the PLC directory, the public register of Bluesky account IDs. I weighted each point by how many accounts were created around it, so busy sign-up periods count as much as they should. I kept only accounts hosted on Bluesky's own servers. The directory also holds IDs registered to other servers (in my first pass, 2,569 of 6,000 came from a single outside server, and none of those had a Bluesky profile), and a few people host their own account, which this leaves out. Of the 6,000 Bluesky accounts I sampled, 36% no longer had a profile. Of a random 300 of those, 246 had been deleted, 45 suspended and 5 deactivated. My tables only count the 3,829 that still exist. The active sample comes from Jetstream, Bluesky's public stream of network events, from 16:01 to 16:11 UTC on October 12, 2026. One 10-minute window (a Monday morning in the US, evening in Europe) favors people in the time zones awake then. Follower counts are from Bluesky's public profile API, read logged out, and they include any bot or spam followers an account has. The top end of the all-accounts table is thin: only 41 accounts in that sample had 1,000 or more followers. All of it is public data.

Wherever you are on these tables, the slow part of moving up is the same: finding people in your niche who'll actually follow you back. That's what I built Agent Sky for. It finds active accounts in your niche and follows them at a human pace, well inside Bluesky's limits, and checks for a live follow-back before it unfollows anyone, so your following count doesn't balloon. $9 a month, free to start. If your count has been stuck, start with why you might not be gaining followers.

Quick FAQ

How many followers does the average Bluesky user have? The typical Bluesky account has 3 followers. That's the median of 3,829 randomly sampled accounts that still existed on October 12, 2026, and 27.6% of them had none. Among accounts that were active on the network that day, the median was 425 followers.

Is 1,000 followers on Bluesky good? Yes. In my sample of all Bluesky accounts, only 1.07% had 1,000 or more followers, so 1,000 puts you in roughly the top 1%. Among accounts that were active on the network right now, about 30% had 1,000 or more, so it's above average there too, though not rare.

How many followers do you need to be in the top 1% on Bluesky? About 1,000 if you compare against every Bluesky account, and about 31,000 if you compare only against accounts that were active on the network at the time. Those are the 99th percentiles from 3,829 random accounts and 4,997 active accounts I sampled on October 12, 2026.
