Can You Edit Bluesky Posts? (No, So I Measured How People Fix Them)
No. As of October 2026, Bluesky has no edit button. If you spot a typo, the only fix that works in the official app is to delete the post and post it again, which wipes its likes and reposts. Bluesky's head of product said in May 2026 that the team is discussing editing with a 5-minute limit, but it hasn't shipped.
Every guide I found stops there. None of them say how often people delete and post again, how fast they do it, or whether a 5-minute window would cover it. So I measured it: in 90 minutes of posts across Bluesky, about 7 posts in every 1,000 were deleted and posted again with almost the same text, usually within half a minute. Half of the fixes changed 8 characters or fewer, and 93% of the fixes I saw happened within 5 minutes.
(Disclosure: I make Agent Sky, a Bluesky growth tool. It doesn't write or edit posts. More on it at the end.)
Can You Edit a Bluesky Post After Posting?
Not in the official app, and not reliably anywhere else. I read the source code of Bluesky's app (as of October 9, 2026). You can edit your profile, lists, saved feeds and starter packs, but not a post. What you can change after posting:
- Who can reply and quote. Open the three-dot menu on your post and choose Edit interaction settings.
- Whether it's pinned. Three-dot menu → Pin to your profile.
- Delete it. Three-dot menu → Delete post. Bluesky warns: "If you remove this post, you won't be able to recover it."
Text, images, alt text, links and the post's language can't be changed once you post.
Is Bluesky Adding an Edit Button?
Maybe, with strict limits. On May 15, 2026, Bluesky's head of product, Alex Benzer, posted a thread saying "we're discussing potentially adding post editing to Bluesky this year" and calling it "the #1 thing yall have been asking for". The rules he proposed:
- You have 5 minutes to edit a post.
- You can edit each post only once.
- You can edit the text and the alt text, but you can't replace an image or video (he added alt text in a reply).
- A prominent "edited" badge appears on the post.
- Version history is visible to everyone.
- Your account has to be at least a week old.
Why it's taken this long, in his words: someone posts "puppies are the best 🐶", collects likes, "then edits it to say something horrible or swaps in a link to a malicious site. now people look like they endorsed it." As of October 9, 2026, there's been no launch announcement from him or from Bluesky's official account.
How Bluesky compares with other networks (October 2026):
| Network | Can you edit a post? | Time limit | Edit history shown? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluesky (today) | No | — | — |
| Bluesky (May 2026 proposal) | Once, text and alt text | 5 minutes | Yes, to everyone |
| Threads | Yes, text only | 15 minutes (raised from 5 in October 2024) | No, just an "Edited" label |
| X | Premium subscribers only, up to 5 times | 1 hour | Yes |
| Mastodon | Yes, as often as you like | None | Yes, and people who boosted it are notified |
How Do You Fix a Bluesky Post Without an Edit Button?
Delete it and post it again, or reply with a correction. To delete and post again:
- Copy the text of the post (long-press it, or select it on the web). Save any images too if you don't still have them.
- Open the three-dot menu on the post and tap Delete post, then confirm.
- Open the composer, paste the text, fix it, and add back any images, alt text and reply settings.
- Post it.
It's the only fix that looks clean in the app. It also costs you everything the post had collected. Its likes and reposts disappear, quote posts show it as deleted, and replies are left under a deleted post.
If people have already liked or replied, a reply with the correction (such as "*their, not there") keeps all of that.
Two habits help next time:
- Use drafts. Bluesky added drafts in February 2026. Close the composer and choose Save draft, or tap Drafts in the composer to come back to one. Drafts work for threads too.
- Check the length before posting. If the end of your post got cut, see how Bluesky counts its 300 characters.
How Often Do People Delete and Post Again to Fix a Post?
About 7 times in every 1,000 posts, and usually within half a minute. Of all posts deleted within 15 minutes of being made, 46% came back as a near-identical post.
How I measured it. I replayed three 30-minute windows of Jetstream, Bluesky's public stream of network events, on October 8–9, 2026 (starting 16:05, 04:05 and 10:05 UTC): 208,198 new posts. To give every post the same 15 minutes to be deleted, I only counted the 105,156 posts made in the first half of each window. When one was deleted, I counted it as a fix if the same account posted text that was at least 60% the same within 10 minutes of the deletion. (In 39 cases the person posted the new version first, then deleted the old one, so I allowed that too.)
What happened to 105,156 posts in their first 15 minutes:
| Count | Share | |
|---|---|---|
| Deleted within 15 minutes | 1,669 | 1.6% of posts |
| …and posted again with near-identical text | 767 | 46.0% of those deletions (7.3 per 1,000 posts) |
| Accounts behind those 767 fixes | 667 | — |
How fast the 767 fixes happened:
| Deleted within… | Share of fixes |
|---|---|
| 30 seconds | 54.4% |
| 1 minute | 69.6% |
| 2 minutes | 82.7% |
| 5 minutes | 92.7% |
| 10 minutes | 97.7% |
The median fixed post was deleted 27 seconds after it went up, and the new version went up 24 seconds after that.
What the numbers show:
- Most fixes are small. Where the text changed, the median fix touched 8 characters, and 44% changed 5 or fewer: a typo, a missing word, a link card that shouldn't have been there.
- A 5-minute window would cover most fixes people make early. Benzer acknowledged that "5 minutes won't catch the typo you spot two hours later." My data can't answer that, because I only followed each post for 15 minutes. Within those 15 minutes, 93% of fixes came inside 5 minutes.
- "One edit only" would bite. At least 62 of the 767 new versions (8.1%) were deleted and posted again, so the fix needed a fix.
- Some fixes aren't to the text at all. In 130 cases (16.9%) the new text was word-for-word the same, so the person was probably changing something else. 101 of those posts had an image, video, link card or quote attached. Alt text fixes would be allowed under the proposal, but a swapped image or a removed link card wouldn't.
Do Bluesky Edit Tools and Extensions Work?
They save the change, but the official Bluesky app keeps showing the original. There are two kinds of tool:
- Tools that rewrite the post in place, such as the Skeeditor browser extension. Your posts are stored with your account, and these tools overwrite the stored post with new text. The stored copy really does change. But the official Bluesky app doesn't read posts from your account directly. It reads them from Bluesky's own copy, and that copy ignores changes to posts. Developers have discussed this since at least 2024 (see this discussion on Bluesky's developer GitHub), where one suggested edits made right after posting might show up. In my data, they didn't.
- Tools that delete the post and post it again under the same link. The BlueSky Edit browser extension works this way, using an app password. Its own store listing warns that existing likes, reposts and quotes are reset and the timestamp changes, so it's a faster version of deleting and posting again.
I tested the first kind with real data. In the same 90 minutes, Bluesky's network carried 488 post edits against 208,198 new posts, and 96.5% came from Mastodon accounts copied into Bluesky by a bridge (Bridgy Fed; Mastodon has an edit button, and the bridge passes edits along). Only 12 accounts that weren't bridged edited a post.
Then I checked what people see. For the 24 posts whose text was edited in a way I could compare (21 from bridged Mastodon accounts, 3 from ordinary Bluesky accounts) and that were still up hours later, Bluesky's app showed the original text every time, even for edits made a second after posting. I also looked up those 24 where each account stores its posts: 23 had the new text, and 1 had been changed again since. Across every edited post from an ordinary Bluesky account in my sample that was still up (8 posts from 6 accounts), the app was still showing an older version than the one the account had stored. So the edit is saved, but most people won't see it.
If you've been "editing" posts with one of these tools and wondering why your followers still see the typo, this is why.
The edit button, if it comes, will fix typos. What it won't fix is the bigger problem for a newer account: a post that gets no likes because too few people see it. That's what I built Agent Sky for. It finds active people in your niche and follows them at a human pace, well inside Bluesky's limits, and checks for a live follow-back before it unfollows anyone. $9 a month, free to start. It won't touch your posts. What it saves you is the hours of finding and following people by hand. For the posts themselves, start with what gets likes on Bluesky and when to quote instead of repost.
Honest limits on these numbers. Three 30-minute windows on one Thursday and Friday aren't a full week, and the busiest hours of the American evening aren't covered (Jetstream was running well behind real time then, so I left those hours out). I followed each post for only 15 minutes, so fixes made later aren't counted, and the 93% figure is a share of early fixes only. The fix count depends on my 60%-similar rule. It misses people who rewrote the post completely and could include a few unrelated look-alike posts. Some of the 767 may be people removing a post for another reason and posting a cleaner version. Timings use the moment Jetstream received each event, which in one window ran 17 to 40 seconds behind, so a few seconds either way. The display check covers 24 posts, most from bridged accounts. Everything came from public data, read while logged out.
Quick FAQ
Can you edit a Bluesky post after posting? No. As of October 2026 the official Bluesky app has no edit button. The usual fix is to copy the text, delete the post and post it again, which also removes its likes and reposts. In my sample of Bluesky's network, about 7 posts in every 1,000 were fixed this way, most within 30 seconds.
Is Bluesky adding an edit button? Maybe. On May 15, 2026, Bluesky's head of product, Alex Benzer, said the team is discussing post editing for this year, with limits: 5 minutes to edit, one edit per post, text and alt text only, a visible edited badge, public version history, and accounts at least a week old. The holdup is safety: someone could collect likes on a harmless post, then change it to something hateful or a malicious link. As of October 9, 2026, it hasn't launched.
Can I edit alt text after posting on Bluesky? No. Alt text is part of the post, and posts can't be edited, so the only way to change it is to delete the post and post it again with the new alt text. Bluesky's May 2026 editing proposal would allow alt text edits, but not swapping the image or video itself.
Is there a way to edit Bluesky posts? Not one that works in the official app. Some extensions, such as Skeeditor, rewrite the post where your account stores it, but Bluesky's app ignores the change: in my check of 24 posts edited that way, the app still showed the original text every time. Others, such as BlueSky Edit, delete the post and post it again under the same link, which resets its likes, reposts and quotes.
