How to Repost on Bluesky (and What 119,588 Reposts Taught Me)
To repost on Bluesky, tap the repost button under a post (the two arrows between reply and like) and choose Repost. To add your own comment, choose Quote post instead. To undo it, tap the button again and choose Remove repost (Undo repost on the web). The post then shows up for your followers with a "Reposted by" line, and the original author keeps every like it gets.
That's the whole how-to, and every guide I found stops there. None of them say how often people repost, how rare a repost is for a small account, or whether quoting gets you more than reposting does. Reposts on Bluesky are public records, so I counted them: 119,588 reposts from six 10-minute windows of Bluesky's public network stream on October 4–5, 2026, plus a follow-up check of 5,509 posts to see which ones were reposted a day later.
(Disclosure: I make Agent Sky, a Bluesky growth tool. It follows people for you at a human pace and doesn't repost anything. More on it at the end.)
How Do You Repost on Bluesky?
Two taps, and it works on any public post, including your own. This is the official app as of October 2026 (iPhone, Android and bsky.app work the same way):
- Find the post in a feed, on a profile or in search.
- Tap the repost button, the two-arrow icon between reply and like.
- Choose Repost. On phones it's a small sheet with Repost and Quote post. On the web it's a dropdown with the same two options.
- Check it went through. The icon turns green and the post appears on your profile with "Reposted by you" above it.
To undo it, tap the green icon again and choose Remove repost (on the web, Undo repost). Plenty of people need this button. In my sample, 772 reposts were undone inside the same 10-minute window, 603 of them within a minute, with a median of 12 seconds. Most look like misfires: the repost icon sits right next to the like.
In the official app you can't repost a post twice. Once you've reposted, the button only offers to remove it. A few people repost, remove it, and repost again to push a post back to the top of their followers' feeds. In my sample, 379 times out of 119,098 (0.3%), the same person reposted the same post more than once, about half of them after removing the first repost.
How Do You Quote Post on Bluesky?
Same button, other option. Tap the repost icon, choose Quote post, write your comment (the normal 300-character limit applies) and post it. The original appears as an embedded card under your text.
Two settings change how quoting works:
- You can stop people quoting your post. In the composer, tap the "Anyone can interact" button (on a published post, open the three-dot menu and choose "Edit interaction settings"), then switch off Allow quote posts. Anyone who tries to quote it sees "Quote posts disabled".
- You can detach your post from someone's quote. If someone quotes you and you don't want your post attached, open the three-dot menu on their quote post and choose Detach quote. Other people then see "Removed by author" where your post was (you see "Removed by you"). Bluesky added quote detaching in August 2024 as one of its anti-toxicity features aimed at dogpiling.
There's no equivalent for reposts. Nothing stops people reposting your posts, and you can't remove a repost someone else made.
What's the Difference Between a Repost and a Quote Post?
A repost shares someone's post unchanged, and the likes it gets go to them. A quote post is a new post of your own with theirs attached, and the likes on it go to you.
| Repost | Quote post | |
|---|---|---|
| What it creates | Nothing new: the original appears in your followers' feeds | A new post of yours with the original embedded |
| Your own words | None | Up to 300 characters |
| Who gets the likes | The original post | Your quote post |
| What the author is notified with | "reposted your post" | Your quote post appears in their notifications |
| Can the author stop it? | No | Yes: disable quotes, or detach the quote |
| How to undo | Remove repost / Undo repost | Delete your post |
| How common (my sample) | 119,588 in 60 minutes | 8,189 in 60 minutes (6.8 per 100 reposts) |
Does reposting notify the author? Yes. They get a "reposted your post" notification, and a quote post shows up in their notifications too, unless they've turned those off in Settings → Notifications.
People choose the plain repost about 15 times as often. For your own account, though, the quote post is the one that counts. In the follow-up check described below, quote posts did about as well as plain text posts from accounts under 1,000 followers: at 100–999 followers, 40.4% of quote posts got no likes against 42.3% of text posts. Above 1,000 followers quotes did somewhat worse (27.5% against 20.6% at 1,000–9,999). A plain repost gets you nothing directly: anyone who likes the post you reposted is liking the original. (Bluesky does notify you when someone likes or reposts something via your repost. It added those "likes of your reposts" and "reposts of your reposts" notifications in July 2025.)
How Often Do Posts Get Reposted on Bluesky?
About 1 original post in 6 (16.8%) had been reposted a day or so after posting in my sample, and under 100 followers it was 1 in 20. After likes, reposts were the most common action in my sample (I didn't count follows), but most of them go to a small number of posts.
How I measured it. I replayed six 10-minute windows of Jetstream, Bluesky's public stream of network events, spaced five hours apart from 09:02 UTC on October 4 to 10:12 UTC on October 5, 2026: 60 minutes of everything people liked, reposted and posted. Then I picked about 5,000 random original posts and 3,000 random quote posts from the first three windows (7,729 loaded) and read their like and repost counts through Bluesky's public API at about 16:05 UTC on October 5, when they were 21 to 31 hours old. I left out accounts averaging 20 or more posts a day over their lifetime (mostly bots and news feeds), which left 5,509 posts.
Everything in 60 minutes of Bluesky's network, October 4–5, 2026 (six 10-minute windows):
| Action | Count | Per new original post |
|---|---|---|
| Likes | 744,387 | 11.0 |
| Reposts | 119,588 | 1.8 |
| New original posts (not replies or quotes) | 67,366 | 1.0 |
| Replies | 56,518 | 0.8 |
| Quote posts | 8,189 | 0.1 |
| Reposts removed | 5,013 | — |
So people make almost two reposts for every new original post, and about 16 reposts per 100 likes. Most of them go to a few posts, though:
Share of original posts reposted at least once, 21–31 hours after posting, by the author's follower count:
| Author's followers | Posts checked | Reposted at least once | Text only | With images |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–99 | 1,313 | 4.8% | 1.2% | 12.4% |
| 100–999 | 1,318 | 17.4% | 8.0% | 32.3% |
| 1,000–9,999 | 512 | 38.3% | 23.7% | 53.6% |
| 10,000+ | 82 | 67.1% | 58.8% | 72.9% |
| All* | 3,240 | 16.8% | 7.9% | 31.3% |
*Includes 15 posts from accounts with 0 followers.
What the table shows:
- Under 100 followers, about 1 post in 20 gets reposted at all. For a text-only post it's about 1 in 80 (11 of 892). That's a big part of why a new account is so hard to grow: almost no reposts means almost nobody outside your followers sees the post.
- Images get reposted far more than text. That held at every follower level, and at 100–999 followers image posts were four times as likely to get a repost. Some of that is who posts images (artists' work is made to be shared), so images alone may not explain the gap. It does match what I found for likes in my likes study.
- The top 1% of posts got 74.9% of all reposts. Of 6,682 reposts on the 3,240 original posts, the 32 most-reposted posts took three in four. Only 5 of those 32 came from accounts under 1,000 followers.
Reposts also travel through other reposts. The official app records when you repost a post that was shown to you as someone else's repost, and 28.3% of the reposts I sampled were marked as coming from another repost. That's a floor, since not every app records it. So more than one repost in four was made from another person's repost.
Most reposters are casual: of 43,213 accounts that reposted in my 60 minutes, 55.4% reposted only once in that time.
How Do You See Who Reposted a Post on Bluesky?
Tap the post to open it, then tap the "reposts" count under the text. That opens the Reposted By list. The "quotes" count next to it lists every quote post. Reposts are public: anyone can see the list, logged in or not, the same way likes are public.
How Do You Turn Off Reposts on Bluesky?
You can hide reposts from one person or from your whole Following feed. You can't stop other people reposting your own posts.
- From one person: open their profile, tap the three-dot menu, choose Hide reposts in feeds. You still see their own posts. Bluesky added this in August 2026 (MacRumors). It's a narrower option than muting or blocking the account.
- From everyone in your Following feed: go to Settings → Content and media → Following feed preferences and switch off Show reposts. There's a separate Show quote posts switch. These settings only apply to the Following feed, not custom feeds.
In Settings → Notifications you can choose whose reposts notify you, including reposts of your reposts.
If you're under 100 followers and nothing you post gets reposted, the numbers above say that's normal, not a sign you're doing it wrong. Reposts mostly go to accounts that already have an audience. A big part of getting that first audience is finding and following the right people. That's what I built Agent Sky for. It follows active accounts in your niche at a human pace, well below Bluesky's rate limits, and checks for a live follow-back before it unfollows anyone. $9 a month, free to start. It won't get your posts reposted. What it saves you is the hours of finding and following people in your niche by hand. For the posts themselves, start with images and replies to accounts near your size.
Honest limits on these numbers. Six 10-minute windows over about a day aren't a full week, and the busiest hours of the American evening are only partly covered. Repost and like counts were read once, 21–31 hours after posting, so some posts will still pick up reposts. The follower buckets use follower counts on October 5. The 10,000+ row is only 82 posts. Excluding accounts that post 20+ times a day removed 28.7% of the sample, so these figures describe ordinary posters, not news bots. Everything came from public data, read while logged out.
Quick FAQ
How do you see who reposted a post on Bluesky? Tap the post to open it. Under the text you'll see counts such as "12 reposts" and "3 quotes". Tap the reposts count to open the Reposted By list, or the quotes count to see every quote post. Reposts are public, so anyone can see this list, not just the author.
How do you turn off reposts on Bluesky? For one person: open their profile, tap the three-dot menu and choose "Hide reposts in feeds". You keep seeing their own posts. For everyone: go to Settings → Content and media → Following feed preferences and switch off "Show reposts" (there's a separate "Show quote posts" switch). There is no setting that stops other people from reposting your posts.
Can you repost your own post on Bluesky? Yes. The repost button works on your own posts the same way it does on anyone else's, and it puts the post back in your followers' Following feeds. It's uncommon: in 119,588 reposts I sampled from Bluesky's network on October 4–5, 2026, 3.2% were people reposting themselves. Quoting yourself is more popular: 18.4% of quote posts in the same sample quoted the person's own post.
How do you undo or delete a repost on Bluesky? Tap the repost button again, which has turned green, and choose "Remove repost" in the phone app or "Undo repost" on the web. The post disappears from your profile. Accidental reposts are common: in my sample, 603 reposts were undone within a minute of being made, with a median of 12 seconds. A quote post is a normal post, so you remove it by deleting the post.
