How the Bluesky follower checker works
Bluesky's data is public by design. Every account exposes two lists through the AT
Protocol's public API: getFollows
(everyone that account follows) and getFollowers
(everyone following it). This tool reads both, 100 accounts at a
time, and subtracts one from the other. What's left is your non-mutuals — the accounts you
follow that don't follow you back.
That's why there's no login step. Nothing here needs your password, an app password, or OAuth, and the account you look up is never notified. It's the same information a person could get by scrolling both of your lists by hand and comparing them — just done in seconds instead of an afternoon.
Why doesn't Bluesky show this itself?
Bluesky's official app deliberately keeps follower relationships low-key. There's a "Follows you" badge on individual profiles, but no screen anywhere that compares your two lists in bulk. On an account following a few hundred people, checking by hand means opening a few hundred profiles.
The gap matters because your follow-back rate is the clearest signal of whether your targeting is working. If you follow 500 accounts and 40 follow back, you're following the wrong accounts — not posting the wrong things. Should you unfollow everyone on the list?
No — and this is where most growth advice gets it wrong. The list above mixes two very different groups:
- Accounts you'd read anyway. News feeds, big creators, that one developer whose posts you actually open. They were never going to follow back and it doesn't matter. Keep them.
- Accounts you followed hoping for a follow-back. If it's been a couple of weeks and nothing happened, it isn't going to. These are the ones to clear out.
The usual mistake is churning too fast: mass-unfollowing hundreds of accounts in one session looks exactly like the fake-engagement behaviour Bluesky's community guidelines prohibit. Spread it out.
